McCamey ISD provides extracurricular athletic programs for the benefit of students. We believe that participation in the various athletic programs can provide students the opportunity to learn many things beyond what is available to them in an academic setting. Students are encouraged to participate in as many extracurricular activities as possible.
We recognize that some of our expectations are more strict for athletes than for the general student body. However, athletes are expected to accept and follow the established policies. Violation of policy will result in corrective and/or disciplinary action. All known facts and circumstances will be taken into consideration when determining what actions will be taken. Students may be disciplined or dismissed from the program for violations of athletic policy.
Quitting Policy - Before a student-athlete quits a sport they will be given a 24 hour re-think period, during that time the student-athlete’s parents will be notified of the student athlete’s intentions. If the 24-hour period the student- athlete quits a sport (or is removed from the team once the first regular scheduled contest has begun) and it is after the first 2 weeks from when they started practice in that sport; he or she will not be allowed to participate in ½ of the next sport that they participate in; if the athlete’s next sport is actually two concurrent sports (i.e baseball and track) then the athlete will sit out ½ of both sports. The student - athlete will be required to be with the team working out during this waiting period. If an athlete quits a sport within the first 2 weeks from when they started practice in that sport, then there are no consequences facing that athlete concerning the next sport that they participate in. This policy is still in effect from the end of one school year (Spring sport) to the start of the next school year (Fall sport). Exceptions to this rule would be a family emergency where, for example, the student-athlete had to drop out of a sport to work to help support their family. The Head Coach must notify the Athletic Director immediately and before this policy is going to be used.
Attendance - Being in attendance at school and practice is part of making a commitment. We expect all athletes to be in class on time, to be at practice and be in the athletic period unless otherwise notified. All coaches plan extensively before practices begin, and when an athlete is a “no show” and has not notified a coach, many changes have to be made. Extenuating circumstances for an absence will always be taken into consideration. A consistent pattern of absences may result in removal from athletics and the ability to represent McCamey Athletics.
There are three types of absences within the McCamey ISD Athletic Department.
School Approved absence: No make-ups required.
Excused: An athlete’s absence will be deemed “excused” when they have contacted a coach before the workout. This should be done by contacting the coach directly. Sickness with a doctor's note, death in the family, etc. are valid reasons for an excused absence. Prior notice of a family shopping trip, etc. is not. Missed conditioning will be made up at the next workout. If an athletic period is missed, the workout will be made up. If a game/contest is missed, the athlete will complete 2 UAP’s before they can play. (These can be completed on gamedays prior to the game)
Unexcused: An athlete’s absence will be deemed “unexcused” when an athlete misses a practice, game, or the athletic period without making direct contact with his/her coach. Conditioning for unexcused absences includes the makeup of the previous day’s conditioning, plus extra if an athletic period is missed. The workout missed must be made up before an athlete can compete in any competition.
1- Unexcused absence 4 UAP’s before you can play. Cannot be completed on gamedays.
2- Unexcused absences 4 UAP’s plus in season consequences.
3- Unexcused absences 8 UAP’s plus in season consequences for 2 unexcused absences.
4 - Unexcused absences - Parent Meeting about removal from team and athletics.
At a minimum, the following game consequences will be enforced for in-season unexcused absences. Off-season absences will be handled upon return of the coach to keep athletes in good standing. Failure to remain in good standing will influence your season's start.
Football / Student Trainers
2 unexcused absences = ½ of game
3 unexcused absences = Full Game
Volleyball / Basketball / Softball / Baseball / Golf
2 unexcused absences = 1 game

Suspension Policy :
The Athletic Director or Head Coach of a sport has the right to suspend a student athlete who continues to show disrespect, or is fighting during a game, practice or in the locker room / classroom setting. Proper documentation is a must. The Head Coach must notify the Athletic Director immediately and before this policy is going to be used.
Injuries : Must be reported to the appropriate coach and/or athletic trainer. It is the student - athlete’s responsibility to follow through with an assigned treatment of an injury.
Doctor’s Note : A student-athlete will not participate in a workout, practice or game ONLY if the following conditions are met: the student-athlete has a doctor’s note, or the coach/athletic trainer have deemed it necessary. Parents’ notes will not be accepted; the athlete must have a doctor’s note, or the coach’s and/or trainers approval.
Participating in Football or Volleyball : A student-athlete who participates in football or volleyball is required to go through 2-a-days workouts. If a student athlete misses 2-a-day workouts and later wishes to participate in either of these sports; they must first get permission from the Athletic Director and Head Coach before being allowed to participate. If permission is granted, then the student athlete will have to do makeup work for the absence and follow UIL acclamation procedures.
Drug & alcohol policy, student code of conduct, student handbook, UIL regulations: All of these policies will be followed by all student-athletes who participate in workouts, travel and contests that are in relation to representing McCamey ISD.
Transportation outside of school vehicles: Student-athletes who request transportation outside of the school vehicles are required to submit a trip request/note before the buses are loaded. In the event of an emergency or legitimate reason students will be released to a guardian or approved guardian. Written permission is a must.
Participating in multiple sports: McCamey ISD encourages athletes to participate in as many extra-curricular athletic activities as possible. Student athletes will not be punished for having to choose between more than one sport offered at McCamey ISD which happens to occur on the same day. Transportation and time are important factors in this. Every effort will be made to accommodate our athletes to compete in multiple sports on the same day. In the case that a solution to a particular multi-sport problem cannot be reached, the Athletic Director will make the final decision.
The Athletic Director has final discretionary authority on a case-by-case basis in dealing with conflicts within the Athletic Program at McCamey ISD. We want every student-athlete at McCamey ISD to have the best chance for success now and later on in life.
